After decades of Furman athletic teams having inconsistent nicknames, the “Paladins” were chosen by the student body as the official mascot in 1961. The football team had been known as the Purple Hurricanes, the baseball team was known as the Hornets, and the track and cross country teams were known as the Harriers, but the history of the basketball team having been called “the Paladins of the Court” by Scoop Latimer of the Greenville News in the 1930s won out. Every team wearing the Furman colors have been the Paladins ever since. “All hail the white and purple!”
